Typewriter museum “Peter Mitterhofer”

In the Typewriter museum “Peter Mitterhofer” in Parcines you can see various interesting prototypes of type writers.

The municipality of Parcines gave his most famous citizen a proper memorial by establishing a small museum to his honour on the occasion of Peter Mitterhofer’s 100th anniversary of his day of death. In 1997, four years after its opening, the museum changed residence and moved into a new building in the centre of Parcines. Come and make a virtual walkthrough with us!

On the ground floor of the “Peter Mitterhofer” museum you can discover the world of writing form its very beginnings. Cuneiform scripts, hieroglyphics as well as a Gutenberg Bible can be admired. Moreover there is a diorama illustrating Peter Mitterhofer and his first typewriter prototype. On the first floor there is the “military vitrine”, showing Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic, Corean, Senegalese and Thai graphic characters. On the same floor there is also the famous prototype “Malling Hansen”, which is considered to be the most precious typewriter ever as well as the highlight of the museum.

We proceed our virtual tour onto the second floor, where a golden “Princess 300″ and a Royal Gold are exhibited. Moreover there are accounting machines, electric typewriters and a phonograph, which has been constructed by the genius Thomas Alva Edison. Also the IBM72, a prototype of the computer, can be admired in the museum.

However, the gallery presents a selection of rare typewriters for blind people as well as a rich variety of typewriters for children from the period of time between 1901 and 1998, such as “La mia prima Olivetti”, “Barbie” and “Mickey Mouse”.

Opening hours and prices:
from April to October Mondays from 2 - 6 pm, Tuesday - Friday from 10 am - noon and from 2 - 6 pm, Saturdays from 10 am - noon, from November to March Tuesdays from 10 am - noon, closed on public holidays, ticket adults from Euro 7.00, free entry for children up to 6 years

Special guided tours in July and August Wednesdays at 9 pm. Guided tours on request year-round.
