Pfander Alm Malga Pfandler
Pfander Alm Malga Pfandler

Historical site Malga Pfandler

This alpine hut, part of the MuseumPasseier, was the refuge for the freedom fighter Andreas Hofer

The Pfandler Alm is located above San Martino in Passiria in Prantago, at 1,350 m a.s.l. First Andreas Hofer, along with wife, child and even scrivener, hid at the Keldererhof farm and later on at the Pfandlerhof farm. The French troops had announced that they would invade via Passo Giovo.

On December 11, 1809, Hofer sent his family in a hideout on Mt. Monteneve, while he walked up the way to the Pfandler Alm. On Christmas Eve his family visited him and they stayed for one and a half months. Even if Andreas Hofer was forewarned, he stayed in his hideaway. For this reason he and his family were arrested by the French and Italians on January 28, 1810, and he was taken to Mantova. His family was released in Bolzano, while he was shot in Mantova on February 20, 1810.

The refuge at the same-named alpine pasture burnt down in 1919 and was rebuilt true to the original by the local Schützen association in 1984. The Pfandler Alm can be reached in 2 hours from San Martino in Passiria on the long-distance hiking trail no. 5.
