The four Garden Worlds

The Botanic Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle are divided into four main sections, each a garden world of its own

Forests of the World, the Sun Gardens, the Water and Terraced Gardens and Landscapes of South Tyrol, these are the four garden worlds in Trauttmansdorff. Each of them is worth to be explored and each reveals a world of its own.

The Forests of the World are characterised by a touch of exotic. Hardwood and conifer woods from North America and East Asia, ferns and “living fossils” represent nature at its very beginning. Also flowering cherries and rhododendrons, rice and tea terraces provide a very special atmosphere. Impressive and unique are slopes in full blossom that are 90 degrees steep.

The Sun Gardens are located right below Trauttmansdorff Castle. This is where the Mediterranean feeling prevails, presenting a southern scenery. The odour of lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage, pine nuts and sun flowers positively flavour of holidays. On the hill not far from this place there are different succulents and and cactuses.

The Water and Terraced Gardens are characterised by the lily pond, in which also the famous lotos flowers bloom. Terraces, stairs and water courses make this garden world even more appealing and dreamy. The riverside of the lily pond is lined by an exotic palm forest. Also Japanese carps have their habitat in the waters of this pond.

The Landscapes of South Tyrol reflect the manifold fauna of South Tyrol. Beech forests, downy oak forests, alluvial forests, cornfields, hedges and chestnut forests characterise this garden worlds. By the way, this is also where you can see the golden replica of a 7,000 years old grape pip, a gift of Georgia.
