Thermal waters
Harmony and recreation for body, soul and spirit
There are two springs supplying the Merano Thermal baths with thermal water. One is found on nearby Monte San Vigilio and is rich in radon, a radioactive noble gas. Known for its therapeutic properties, it has been pumped since 1960 and is now used for radon inhalations and radon baths.
Latest tests have shown that the water features a radon concentration of 777 Bq/l (Becquerel per litre). It is accordingly classified as “mildly radioactive” and boasts a variety of therapeutic properties:
> soothing and pain-relieving effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems (ideally-suited to treat osteoarthrosis and other disorders of the bones, joints and muscles);
> dilatation of the peripheral vessels with antihypertensive effects (especially indicated for women with chronic disorders of the veins);
> positive effects on the respiratory system (strengthening the natural resistance of the respiratory tract).
The therapies are however only available to patients who have undergone a prior medical check-up with the resident physician of the Merano Thermal Baths.
In addition, the Merano Thermal Baths will be soon using thermal waters from a new well, recently found at a depth of 2,350 meters. The sulphur water of 33° C contains brine and several, other valuable substances.
