They invaded the country via Passo Monte Giovo and Val Passiria and their intention was to conquer Tyrol, but the inhabitants of the valley struggled emphatically. On November 22 the Frenchmen capitulated under Major Dorell. While “only” 22 inhabitants of the valley lost their lives, about 230 Frenchmen died in these fights. Their corpses were sepulchred at the riverside of the Passirio.
