Sarentino Alps

Some summits of the Sarentino Alps such as the Monte Ivigna and Monte Cervina rise in the surroundings of Merano.

The Sarentino Alps, a mountain range in the province of Bolzano, is devided into a western and eastern part. The borderline in between is represented by the 2,215 m high Passo di Pennes in Val Sarentino, which connects the Alta Valle Isarco with Bolzano. The Sarentino Alps, comprising some 140 mountain summits, is a horseshow-shaped mountain range stretching from the south of South Tyrol towards Merano and surroundings. Its highest mountain is the Monte Cervina with 2,781 m asl. A further mountain that belongs to this mountain range is the famous Monte Ivigna (2,581 m asl), one of the most popular mountains in the surroundings of Merano.

In the so-called “Hufeisentour” (horseshoe-tour) you can experience the Sarentino Alps within one week on a well-marked high path. Several mountain huts are spread in this area and there are several interesting sights such as the earth pyramids on the Renon or the pilgrimage church of the Croce di Lazfons (2,311 m asl), one of the highest-located pilgrimage sites of Europe.
