Ötzi

The legendary Iceman was discovered in the Ötztal Alps and is exhibited in the Archaeology Museum of Bolzano

Famous all over the world and thus a true “celebrity” is a man, we only know as a body. This might sound a bit strange, but nevertheless he attracts thousands of visitors every year. Ötzi is actually a well-preserved natural mummy, whose remains emerged from a melting glacier in the Ötztal Alps in September 1991. Experts estimate he died some 5,300 years ago and might thus be Europe's oldest natural mummy ever. He got his name from the place he was found in, the sparkling white Ötztal Alps.

Since 1998 the legendary Iceman, also known as Frozen Fritz or Similaun Man, might be visited at the Archaeology Museum of Bolzano. There he lies in a specifically built chamber at a temperature of -6°C and an air humidity of 98 %. Furthermore there is an exhibition on the same floor of the museum giving an insight into Ötzi’s everyday life, showing his clothes made of furs and grass and his hunting equipment. Numerous legends and even jokes are told about the man of the ice, who is definitely worth a visit!
