Already in the 30s people - especially cross-country skiers and biathletes - were using poles for summer training and walking. In the 80s it was re-discovered in the States, but it wasn't until 1997 that it gained popularity as (Finnish) Nordic Walking.
Since then it has been booming. The special kind of sports might be done with all weathers and uses two specially designed poles to work the upper body while walking. The poles take off strain of knees and ankles and give your body more balance.
Did you know that the South Tyrolean villages Merano, Tirolo, Scena and Rifiano actually feature a total of four Nordic Walking paths? They boast a length of 26 km and an altitude difference of 120 m. Further Alpine Fit & Wellness courses are found in Naturno, ideally-suited to the most different kind of fitness levels.
