Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park
Not only marmots, goats and golden eagles have their natural environment in this nature park.
Located at the heart of Merano and surroundings, the majestic Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park stretches from Val Senales to Val Passiria and even further to the main Alpine ridge. With its 33,430 hectares it is South Tyrol’s biggest nature park and includes the entire Gruppo di Tessa mountains as well as the northern Ötztal Alps and a small part of the Stubai Alps.
Mediterranean habitats alternate with high Alpine sceneries, sunny steppes and rich green spruces. Lovely irrigation channels, the so-called Waalwege, high mountain pastures and highly diversified meadows are spread all over the area, serving as valuable biotopes. Hikers and nature lovers agree: the Gruppo di Tessa nature park is not only the biggest but also the most beautiful one of all seven South Tyrolean nature parks.
Besides deer, chamois and marmots there are numerous southern types of animals, such as the crag martin or the praying mantis, reptiles or asp vipers. The visitor centre of Naturno will introduce you to this fascinating natural scenery. We suggest: hike along a high-altitude trail called “Meraner Höhenweg” across the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park - for a total of 5 days.
