Cermes Waalweg path

The Cermes Waalweg path defines the southern part of the Marlengo Waalweg path: starting from Lana di Sopra, it is perfect for a circular tour in the sun-drenched vineyards surrounding Monteleone Castle

On a sunny day in mid-November, when the golden leaves fall from the trees, we decide to do a circular tour on the Cermes Waalweg path. We start in Lana, near the lower terminus of the Monte S. Vigilio funicular. From Ville road, we walk to the junction of Raffein road, and follow this road and the signpost indicating the way to the "Waalweg" trail. After a 20-minutes' walk, we reach this former irrigation canal, that leads us the way through a landscape of vineyards and apple orchards, without any notable ascents.

Every now and again, the view opens up on the colourful Val d'Adige, with the mountains of Merano in the background: Tessa mountain group, Cresta Giovo, Punta Cervina and Monte Ivigna, already snow-capped. At the altitude of the Eggbauer farm, we leave the Waalweg path in order to make a side trip to Baslan (Basling). The little settlement above Cermes was constructed round the eponymous residence. We follow the mark to the little St Anna chapel and enjoy the possibilities to picnic along the wayside, as we brought packed lunch (in November most of the taverns along the Waalweg path are closed).

Then we return to the Waalweg path and follow the signpost to Monteleone. This castle, between forest and vineyards, is considered one of the most elegant in the surroundings of Merano. A little asphalted road, finally takes us back to our starting point. What we absolutely won't forget are the impressions we were able to gather today: the fabulous view of the amazing landscape of Merano and its surroundings.
