Malerhaus - art school
Once upon a time in Val Passiria there was an art school, which has left its marks in the valley.
Again and again at San Martino in Passiria and surroundings there are constructions that are decorated with wonderful frescos.
The building in which the art school was accommodated from 1719 to 1845 is located above the village of San Martino. Except of the decorated façade with paintings illustrating Saint Martin, Saint George and Mother of God, there are no other indications reminding on the original purpose.
The art movement which was pursued by the pupils of these days was the so called Nazarene movement and they established pieces of art all over Tyrol. Of course the major part of pieces of art concentrate in Val Passiria, there are for example some in the parish church of San Martino. After the death of Benedikt Auer in 1845 the school has definitely been closed.
