Cima Bianca Grande

Opposite the Altissima, there is the majestic Cima Bianca Grande, rising in the surroundings of Merano

The Cima Bianca Grande (3,278 m a.s.l. - Hohe Weisse, in German) is one of the highest mountains of the Gruppo di Tessa. The tour to the summit starts in Plan in Val Passiria and it takes about 4 hours. From the parking space you walk on a forested trail until you reach the Lazinserhof farm (1,722 m a.s.l.) and the Lazins alpine pasture (1,860 m a.s.l.). Up to this place you can also cycle with your mountain bike: when you return after having scaled the mountain, you might look forward to this change.

From the Malga Lazins, the trail starts getting steeper, until you reach the famous Rif. Petrarca all'Altissima (Stettiner Hütte in German) at 2,875 m a.s.l. This is where the tours to the Cima Bianca Grande and the Willy-Ahrens trail (1.5 hours) start. The Altissima can also be scaled from this popular mountain hut, via the Hans Grützemacher trail (1.5 hours).

The mountain hut also offers the possibility to stay overnight. For scaling the Cima Bianca Grande, walk to the Passo Gelato (Eisjöchl in German) and continue towards the eastern ridge. After a short passage downwards, the trail starts getting very steep. Be careful: the rocks are rather brittle and you absolutely need to be sure-footed. The view is breathtaking and ranges from the Cima Fiammante to the Altissima and the Cima delle Anime. Just amazing!

Please note: the Rifugio Petrarca was partly destroyed by an avalanche in February 2014. Since summer 2017 it offers again overnight accommodation!
