Postal Animals’ Museum
Animals are in the centre of attention in the Animals’ Museum at Postal.
In 1972 Simon Ratschiller, an experienced taxidermist, opened South Tyrol’s only museum of animals. Located in Postal near to Merano, it hosts a total of 300 different types of birds as well as numerous mammals found all over South Tyrol’s mountains, pastures and woods. Its aim is to introduce men to the world of animals and to create an affinity between the two worlds.
Nowadays it would be impossible to dissect such a rich number of birds and animals as many of them are protected by law. Simon Ratschiller, however, dissects only animals - such as bears, harvest mice and golden eagles - that were previously killed by hunters or died accidentally. For song birds he’s got a special authorization and numerous migratory birds complete his collection. Did you know that South Tyrol is especially rich in birds?
Furthermore, Simon Ratschiller promoted the creation of the only biotope all over the Val d’Adige valley. So when visiting the animal museum, why not pay a visit to the biotope too?
