This museum is accommodated in the Sandhof, the birthplace and residence of Andreas Hofer, famous freedom fighter.

Heroes & Hofer, this is how the circuit in the cellar of the Sandhof in San Leonardo in Passiria is called. It is meant to provide information regarding the way of thinking of freedom fighters as well as the reasons for their actions.
The happenings of the year 1809 are commented and tackled from various points of view. The history of the Tyrolean hero is put in a European context and the heroes are made appear in a different light.
Moreover questions are promptet that never have been asked before. The myth Andreas Hofer is softly removed and replaced by the mechanism in the society that makes ordinary humans become heroes.
The history of Andreas Hofer, from a European point of view opens up new horizons and liberates from obstinate patriotism and one-sided knowledge. The new permanent exhibition has been established in the course of preparations for the 200th anniversary of the freedom fights of 1809.
Particularly interesting, also for visitors without previous knowledge are the written information accompanying the exhibition, also suitable for children.

There is for example the bunker Mooseum at Moso in Passiria, the alp museum on the Pfandler Alm alpine pasture of San Leonardo, the Frenchmen’s cemetery in San Leonardo and Castel Giovo. All of these places are testimonies of an intense time in the past.
