Malga Pfandler

This alpine pasture has been place of refuge for the freedom fighter Andreas Hofer in the time he was in fear of his life.

The Pfandler Alm alpine pasture is located above San Martino in Passiria at Prantach (1,350 m) asl.
First Andreas Hofer, along with wife, child and even scrivener, hid at the Kelderer and later on at the Pfandlerhof farm. The French troops had announced that they would invade via Passo Giovo.
On December 11, Hofer and his family sent his family in a hideout at Monteneve, while he walked up the way to the Pfandleralm alpine pasture. On Christmas Eve his family visited him and they stayed for one and a half months. Even if Andreas Hofer was forewarned, he stayed in his hideaway.
For this reason he and his family were arrested by the French and Italians on January 28, 1810 and he was taken to Mantova. His family has be released in Bolzano, while he was shot in Mantova in the month of February.

The refuge at the Malga Pfandler alpine pasture burnt in 1919 and has been reconstructed by the local Schützen association in 1984, true to the original. Visiting this place can perfectly been combined with a hike, Malga Pfandler is open from May to October. Closed on Mondays.
