Scena Castle

In the heart of the village of Scena rises a venerable castle of the same name

Scena Castle was built around 1350 by Petermann of Scena of the Lords of Scena (Schenna). There was a castle already at much earlier times, upon whose remnants Scena Castle was built. Among the famous owners there were, for instance, the Lords von Starkenberg, the Counts of Lichtenstein, Frederick of the Empty Pockets or Archduke John of Austria. The numerous owners renovated, changed and characterised the building.

Archduke John of Austria, who was laid to rest with his family in the close-by neo-Gothic mausoleum (Erzherzog Johann-Mausoleum in German), left the castle to his descendants, the Counts of Merano, which manage and inhabit it still today. The property includes also the mausoleum and the Thurnerhof farm with a tavern.

Those crossing the castle bridge will reach the gate and if walking further, past the dungeon, you will arrive to a charming inner courtyard. An open staircase leads upstairs to the rooms which are open to public viewing (except the private rooms of the counts family). In the course of a guided tour you can watch the collections of Archduke John of Austria, the state-rooms, a collection of arms dating back to the 12th - 19th century and the world's largest private Andreas Hofer collection.
