Mayenburg Castle

Mayenburg Castle is located on a long hill close to Foiana in the surroundings of Merano.

It embellishes the low mountain range of Tisa and is considered a prehistoric fortification. That’s what is assumed by scientists, as the position of the castle is really strategic. Moreover it is considered to be part of the fortification system of the Counts of Appiano. When this family became extincted in 1253, the castle complex passed on to the Earls of Tyrol.

The Mayenburg family became extincted in 1358 and the castle kept changing hands until 1600, when the Brandis family assumed responsibility for the castle for a longer period of time.
The donjon of the tower dates back to the ending 11th century, parts of the circular wall with crenels surround the grand hall and further residential buildings. In the chapel there are wall paintings dating back to the early 15th centruy. Moreover there is a round tower serving as dovecot and protection for the castle fountain. A farmer bought the castle in 1814 in a ruinous state. When a physician from Merano purchased the castle, he also had it modestly renovated. Today Mayenburg Castle is in possession of the Auffinger family. The ruin is closed, further information about access to the castle in the restaurant beneath.

Mayenburg Castle can be accessed via a road branching off at Foiana.
