Castel Leone
Castel Leone at Lana dates back to the time at the turn of the 11th century.
The position of the Leonburg, at the road to Passo delle Palade, attached great military importance to this castle. In 1275 count Meinhard II von Tirol raided the castle. Before the second raid could take place, the owner, Count Brandis voluntarily passed on the key to the conqueror.
In 1295 Leonburg Castle passed into the hands of Gorizia-Tirolo.
Like many other castles, also Leonburg castle was destroyed by a huge fire in the middle of the 13th century and in the years to follow it has been reconstructed. In the time between 1461 to 1463 the Counts of Brandis purchased the castle and still own it today. For this reason the structure has roughly been preserved in its original state.
Leonburg castle provides an snsight into the Mediaeval architecture of defensive castles. Two three-storey donjons can be found in the castle complex and testify the defensive character of the castle.
Today the castle is in private ownership, it cannot be visited.
