Aura Castle

Aura Castle, a beautiful medieval building, is located at the entrance of Val di Sopranes at Tirolo

Aura Castle was mentioned for the first time in written documents at the end of the 13th century. The part of the castle which today is used as residential building has only been documented in the next century. The northern side of the building is located at the escarpment of the Val di Sopranes, above Tirolo. Aura Castle is accessible only from Tirolo village and belongs due to its position to Val Passiria.

When the Lords of Auer surrendered possession, the family von Botsch purchased the castle. In the following centuries the ancient building repeatedly changed hands and lost its lordly appearance. Aura Castle (Schloss Auer in German) deteriorated to a farmstead. The present owners, the Counts of Khuen-Belasi, ensured that it was restored in the old architectural style.

The castle has pretty sure never been a defensive castle, as there is no defensive tower. The crenellated circular wall is overgrown by ivy. There is also a little castle chapel boasting a winged altar. Worth mentioning is the central hall with beamed ceiling and frescoes from the 16th century as well as the late Gothic parlour. Today Aura Castle is inhabited and offers holiday apartments.
