Schnals Karthaus Senales Certosa

Certosa

The origins of Certosa date back to the construction of a Carthusian monastery in 1326.

Certosa, located at 1,327 m, harkens back on a lively history. Its origins date back to the year 1326, when a monastery was built in this place, due to the fact that the remote position of this spot of land resulted ideal for a Catholic hermit order. The Carthusians used to love the isolation and had even cells built that are free from daylight, which can still be visited today.

When the monastery was devastated by a fire, the Carthusians left the village, while the monastery was renovated. Still today worth seeing is the cuisine of the monastery with its mystical signs, as well as the via crucis of the ancient cloister, which in summer is often transformed into an exhibition area for local artists.

The intact natural landscape surrounding Certosa is ideal for hiking. Right before Certosa, the Val di Fosse joins the valley basin. This valley offers a series of fabulous hiking destinations. From October to May, you can enjoy skiing at the glacier of the Val Senales.
