San Leonardo in Passiria

San Leonardo in Passiria is the birthplace of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer and represents the center of the valley.

San Leonardo in Passiria is a market town with some 3,500 inhabitants and is considered to be both the economic and political centre of the valley. The municipal territory stretches from 693 to 1,262 m asl and borders on the municipalities of Moso and San Martino in Passiria. Located in a valley basin, it is situated at the parting of the roads to Passo del Rombo and Passo del Giovo, directly at the Gruppo di Tessa nature park.

The municipality comprises the following villages: Passo, Mora, Prantago, Schlattach, Valtina and Gomion - originally the territory of the municipality stretched from Passo del Rombo to the present-day Scena. Meadows and forests characterise the landscape in the surroundings of the municipality. However, not only nature casts a spell over the visitors, but also numerous attractions in the village that are worthwhile. The MuseumPasseier in the birthplace of the Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer, Castel Giovo, the Frenchmen cemetery and the Pfistrad alpine pasture are only some of the sights in the municipality of San Leonardo.

By the way, also Josef Pichler, alias Pseirer Josele, the first ascendant of the Ortles, was born in San Leonardo, likewise the ski racer Werner Heel.
