Schloss Juval

Juval Castle

The museum and residence of Reinhold Messner

Towering high above Naturno in a prehistoric place, Juval Castle was built in 1278 by Hugo von Montalban. Since 1983 it has served as the residence of extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner and houses thus the world-famous Messner Mountain Museum Juval.

Dedicated to the religious aspects of the mountains, the museum is actually only one part of a much larger concept of museums by Reinhold Messner. Spread all over South Tyrol, there is a total of 5 Messner Mountain Museums, making up the world's only and biggest mountain museum ever.

The idea behind the mountain museums is to promote the respect and sensitivity towards the mountains. The MMM Juval hosts four different art collections: masks from all over the world, Tibetan pieces of art, equipment used during his expeditions and various findings and items originating in distant mountain areas and exotic cultures.
